Key points of interest in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. In 28 August 1207, King John issued letters patent promoting the establishment of a new borough, ‘Livpul’, and inviting settlers to come and take up holdings there, in order, it seems, to establish a port in the district that was free from the control of his political rivals (“History of Liverpool”, [s.d.]). QUOTATION British architectural critic Ian Nairn, in Britain's Changing Towns (1967), predicts "...if Liverpool can get into top gear again there is no limit to the city's potential. The scale and resilience of the buildings and people is amazing – it is a world city, far more so than London and Manchester.” SOURCES “History of Liverpool”. [s.d.] Wikipedia. Available: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Liverpool [2012, June 29]. Nairn, Ian. 1967. Britain's changing towns. BBC Books. Enjoy this puzzle? Key points of interest in Widnes, Halton, Cheshire, England. The name Widnes is usually thought to have evolved from the Danish words vid, meaning wide, and noese, meaning nose. The ‘wide nose’ is considered to refer to the headland protruding into the River Mersey. However, as the projection is relatively narrow, another possible explanation for the name is that the first half derives from the Danish ved, meaning a wood, which could refer to the trees covering the promontory (“Widnes”, [s.d.]). QUOTATION Melanie C, one of the famous, but now disbanded, pop group Spice Girls, completed her schooling in Widnes at the Fairfield High School. In the song “First Day of My Life”, she poignantly sings, “Will I find salvation in the arms of love? / Will it stop me searching? / Will it be enough? // I don’t want your sympathy” (Chambers & Iglesias, [s.d.]).
