Geography: Sunderland

Key points of interest in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, North East England. In Old English sundor meant ‘separate’, with ‘land’ clearly referring to the extent of the area involved (Ancestry.com, [s.d.]). The Anglo-Saxon monk and poet Bede (673-735 AD), who is reputed to have been born in the region, states that the land concerned was split off from that of the monastery of Monkwearmouth, which stood on the north bank of the River Wear (Simpson, 2009). SOURCE In the graphic novel Alice in Sunderland, the comics author and artist Bryan Talbot tells the history of Sunderland from the Middle Ages to the current day. As he himself states: “In words and pictures, the alchemy of the comic medium shall conjure a vision of Sunderland in the crucible of your imagination.” Described by critics as a literary and visual masterpiece, the work, which is an eclectic mix of myth, history, and autobiography, is seen by many as the artist’s greatest achievement to date.
