Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader in South Africa. He fought against apartheid, where black people were segregated from whites and didn't have the same rights as them. He thought that was wrong. He spent much of his adult life in prison for his protests. He became a symbol of hope and strength for his people. He later became President of South Africa.
